The Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG debuted at the LA Motor Show, and powered by
an AMG 6.0-litre Biturbo V12 engine, it is the German automaker’s most
powerful sedan yet.
The vehicle has staggering power figures of 630PS and 1000Nm of stomach-churning torque, mated to a 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS transmission that has three selectable modes, namely Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M). With an electronically limited top-speed of 250kmph, the car goes from naught to 100kmph in 4.3 seconds. Efficiency and emission numbers stand at 8.4kmpl and 279g/km respectively. A start/stop system, reduced-friction bearings, transmission oil heat management, aluminium crankcase, alternator management, Lithium-ion battery, forged crankshaft, carbonfibre engine cover and multispark ignition are other mechanical highlights.
It also gets Mercedes ‘Magic Body Control’. As the ‘Road Surface Scan’ detects undulations with the help of the stereo camera, Magic Body Control adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation. At the same time, AMG-specific tweaks on the 4-link front and multi-link independent rear offer more feedback. The car also has an electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with variable ratio, AMG forged lightweight alloys and AMG high-performance braking system.
The multi-slat grille and splitters, quad exhausts, side air intakes, larger front air intakes, V12 badging, Nappa leather, AMG sports seats, bi-spoke AMG steering wheel, aluminium shift paddles, steel door panels and new dials in the TFT colour display are cosmetic enhancements. Head-up display and a touchpad are two new debuting features. The head-up display measures 21cm wide and shows data like navigation instructions, vehicle speed, and adaptive cruise control. The touchpad is placed near the armrest between the driver and passenger and controls the infotainment system. It recognises words and numbers and also responds to one and two finger gestures, swipes, widening and narrowing finger movements.
Optional add-ons include 360° camera, business telephony in the rear, designo appointments packages, executive seat, first-class rear suite, individual entertainment system in the rear, folding tables in the rear and warmth comfort package. The new S 65 AMG is available exclusively with a long wheelbase.
Details on the pricing and availability are still being awaited.
